Description
You may find this quilt surprisingly easy to put together. There is no curved piecing and as long as you are organized with your cutting and fabric colors, the background water will come together in no time. The pieced background of the Water Lilies quilt utilizes a technique called “Bias Tucks”. I first saw this in Jennie Rayment’s book, “Creative Tucks And Textures For Quilts And Embroidery”. This quilt differs slightly in that we will be using homespun fabrics & rectangles. These fabrics have a looser weave than your typical quilting cottons so we don’t need to cut the fabric on a bias. There is enough stretch in the homespun to easily create the curves. We are also elongating the squares into rectangles allowing us to create the waves in the background water.
The water lily flowers are made kinda like origami. There is a bit of hand work needed to bring the petals together, but don’t worry – they are really quite easy!
The lily pads are simple fusible applique. I used fusible webbing and then a simple blanket stitch around the raw edges.
